presidents cup ihra 2MECHANICSVILLE, Md. (June 17, 2016) – It was a record-setting night as International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) Drag Racing returned to Maryland International Raceway for the 22nd annual IHRA President’s Cup Nationals Fueled by Sunoco, the third race of the 2016 IHRA Drag Racing Series season. After two qualifying sessions, Jason Rupert, Billy Harper, Tracy Kile and Cary Goforth lead their respective IHRA categories.

IHRA new 2Two-time and defending AMSOIL Nitro Funny Car champion Jason Rupert picked up right where he left off after winning the season’s second race in Texas.  His 5.635-second pass at 255.39 mph set the Maryland International Raceway track record, and he is the No. 1 qualifier entering President’s Cup Nationals eliminations on Saturday. Mike McIntire, Jr., who qualified second, set the track speed record reaching 258.71 mph at the finish line.

Harper, the IHRA Pro Mod points leader, set the Pro Mod World Record when he covered the quarter mile in just 5.832 seconds at 235.93 mph.  Harper’s first round elapsed time, 5.873 seconds, was within one percent of the record run and serves its “backup.”

Jay Turner, the four-time and defending IHRA Nitro Motorcycle champion, set both ends of the track record during the first round of qualifying with a 6.285-second effort at 228.11 mph.  In the second session, however, Kile, who entered the President’s Cup Nationals in eighth place in the point standings, snatched the top spot and the records from a 6.253-second run at 230.33 mph.  Kile owns Maryland International Raceway’s elapsed time and speed records for the class.

Goforth, who is currently second in the IHRA Pro Stock point standings, raced to the qualifying lead after two rounds.  His 6.249-second pass at 223.80 mph was good enough to take the top spot with one qualifying round remaining.

Racing action resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. eastern time with Sportsman qualifying; the final round of professional qualifying is set for 2 p.m. with eliminations at 5 p.m. The AMSOIL Nitro Funny Car field is set.
