POWRI: Bayston Dominates at Valley Speedway as Toyotas Sweep Podium

PLANO, Texas (July 16, 2017) – Spencer Bayston led wire-to-wire to win the second night of the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League’s “Thunder in the Valley” at the Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Missouri, as Toyota-powered entries swept the victory podium Saturday night with Tanner Thorson finishing second and Zach Daum in third.

The win was Bayston’s first of the season in POWRi competition. Overall, it’s his second national midget feature win in 2017 and the 19th for a Toyota-powered driver.

Starting from the pole, Bayston immediately moved to the bottom of the track with teammate Thorson in tow. As Bayston became more comfortable with the track, he began to distance himself from the pack, leaving the battle for second on back.

A late-race caution gave the field one more shot at Bayston with just four laps remaining with Daum having moved up to second and Thorson in third. Thorson immediately went to the curb as the green flag waved, while Daum went to the bottom of the track with Thorson eventually winning that battle to take over second, but Bayston had once again pulled away from the field on the way to the victory.

“Starting on the pole there, I was a little worried,” said Bayston, a Lebanon, Indiana native. “Running the bottom really isn’t my specialty, and it was pretty precise down there. I knew who was starting behind me (Thorson) and I tried to hit my marks and run a good, clean race. No one ever really showed me a nose, but I could hear them back there and I just tried to stay focused on what I was doing. Big Al (Scroggins) and Keith (Kunz) gave me a good enough racecar tonight that I was able to mess with it there and get myself more comfortable throughout the feature. Hat’s off to all those guys who work so hard in the shop.”

After winning Friday night’s feature, Thorson fell one position short of collecting the bonus offered to any driver that could sweep the double-header.

“I was actually fortunate enough to see someone up above me,” said Thorson. “I jumped up there and made the best of what I could. Hat’s off to Spencer, he didn’t make one mistake out there, it’s good when the team wins. I love coming to this track, it was real technical there.”

Rookie Logan Seavey placed sixth, while Tucker Klassmeyer finished seventh as five Toyota drivers earned top-10 showings on the night. Holly Shelton (11th), Aidan RoosEvans (13th), Jodie Robinson (18th), Ryan Robinson (21st) and Tanner Carrick (23rd) rounded out the Toyota contingent Saturday night.

With two more podium finishes to his credit this weekend, Daum has now extended his point lead to a whopping 450 points over Seavey, with Klaasmeyer in third and Bayston in fourth. Daum is seeking his fourth POWRi national championship in the last five years.

The POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League is back in action next Saturday night at the Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville, Ill.
