Bayston, Toyota Win Belleville Midget Nationals in Dominating Fashion

PLANO, Texas (August 6, 2017) – Spencer Bayston led all 40 laps in a dominating performance to win the 40th annual Belleville Midget Nationals as Toyota-powered cars captured the top six finishing positions Saturday night.

The victory was the third national win of the season for Bayston and the 23rd for a Toyota-powered car. It also marked the fourth time in the last five years that a Toyota driver has captured the Belleville Midget Nationals crown.

It was Bayston’s night from the start as he set a new eight-lap track record in winning his heat race and then established another Belleville record in winning the four-lap Pole Dash.

In the feature, Bayston took the lead at the green flag and immediately started pulling away from the field and by lap 10 had opened up more than a three-second advantage over second-place Tanner Thorson, with Friday night winner and defending champion Chad Boat in third.

After a pair of cautions bunched the field back up in the midway portion of the race, Bayston picked up right where he left off, pulling away from Thorson, with fellow Toyota drivers Boat, Jerry Coons Jr., Brady Bacon, Ryan Robinson, Holly Shelton and Tanner Carrick in tow.

After that, the only thing able to slow Bayston down was a late-race incident when a car spun in front of Robinson, who clipped it going by and flipped his car. Robinson, who was running sixth at the time, suffered no injuries, but it ended his night and set-up one last chance for the field to make a run at Bayston with just two laps remaining.

But it wasn’t meant to be as the 18-year-old Bayston once again pulled away from Thorson on the way to the way to victory. Thorson would finish second, followed by Boat, Coons and Bacon.

“I’m just so happy to get Keith Kunz and Pete Willoughby back in victory lane in Belleville,” said a triumphant Bayston. “Thank you to Toyota Racing and my entire team.”

Holly Shelton finished sixth with Carrick coming home eighth and Robinson was eventually scored in tenth as Toyota drivers climbed eight of the top-10 finishing positions.

With the victory, Bayston has opened up a 38-point lead over Bacon in the USAC National Championship with just eight races remaining.

Next up for the USAC National Midget Championship is the third annual Pennsylvania Midget Week. The four-race stretch gets underway Sunday, Aug. 13 at York Haven’s Susquehanna Speedway, followed by Spring Run’s Path Valley Speedway Park on Monday, Aug. 14 and Lanco’s Clyde Martin Memorial Speedway in Newmanstown on Tuesday, Aug. 15. A one-day rest or possible rain date is slotted for Wednesday, Aug. 16 before the series resumes Thursday, Aug. 17 at Linda’s Speedway In Jonestown, Pa.
