PLANO, Texas (August 14, 2017) – Tanner Thorson finished second, while Keith Kunz Motorsports (KKM) Toyota teammate Spencer Bayston was third in the opening race of the USAC National Midget Series’ “Pennsylvania Midget Week” Sunday night at the Susquehanna Speedway in York Haven, Pa.

Three Toyota-powered drivers combined to lead all but the final corner on Sunday as pole-sitter Thorson would take the lead at the green flag with Brady Bacon in second and Bayston in third. Thorson held the point position until lap six when he slid up the track in turn two, opening the door for Bacon to go underneath and take over the race lead.

At that point, Bacon threatened to check out, opening up almost a two second lead before a caution waved with 13 laps remaining. As the action returned to green, Bacon was able to hold the top spot until Thorson went outside on Bacon while exiting turn four to reassume the lead with seven laps to go.

Thorson appeared to be on the way to his fifth national feature win of the season until a yellow flag came out with just two laps remaining to bunch the field once again as Bacon’s night came to an end after slowing to a stop in turn three when a universal joint went out. Bacon led 17 of the 30 laps, but would eventually be scored in 16th.

Thorson led the field to the green, but Bayston, fresh off a Belleville Nationals victory, took the lead heading into the final lap. The two Toyota-powered entries battled to the finish when they almost got together coming off turn four with Bayston biking on the cushion, which opened the door for third-place Justin Grant to take the lead coming out of the final turn for the victory. Thorson would come home second, while Bayston was third. KKM teammate Tanner Carrick would finish fifth after charging up from his 14th starting position.

Chad Boat placed sixth, with Holly Shelton finishing eighth to give Toyota five drivers in the top 10.

The 18-year-old Bayston continues to hold the USAC National Championship lead with a 65-point advantage over second place Shane Golobic with just seven races remaining.

Night two of Pennsylvania Midget Week is scheduled for tonight at Path Valley Speedway Park in Spring Run.
