Beckman, Infinite Hero Dodge Funny Car leads DSR near Denver

Schumacher quickest DSR dragster in Mopar Mile-High Nationals

MORRISON, Colo. (July 24, 2015) – Jack Beckman predicted a Funny Car would crack the 4-second barrier this weekend for the first time at Bandimere Raceway during the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals.

The 2012 NHRA world champion came within 15-thousandths of a second Friday night of being a perfect prognosticator at the highest track on the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series – 5,800 feet – that chokes the 10,000-horsepower Chrysler Hemi engines of oxygen.

And as much as Don Schumacher Racing’s driver of the Infinite Hero 2015 Dodge Charger R/T wanted it to be him, Beckman was only slightly further of cracking the barrier with a time of 4.035 seconds at 313.73 mph to be the second quickest in the first of two qualifying sessions and end the day as the No. 4 qualifier behind John Force who set the track elapsed time record at 4.015.

The four DSR Dodge Funny Cars qualified in the top-eight with Tommy Johnson Jr. (Make-A-Wish), winner of the last Mello Yello event, ranked fourth followed by Ron Capps (NAPA AUTO PARTS) seventh and Matt Hagan (Mopar Express Lane/Rocky Boots) eighth.

In Top Fuel, current points leader Tony Schumacher and the U.S. Army team lead the DSR contingent with a best run of 3.835 (316.60) that ranks fifth going into Saturday. The eight-time and reigning world champion is followed by DSR’s Spencer Massey (Red Fuel Powered by Schumacher/Sandvik Coromant) in sixth and Antron Brown (Matco Tools/U.S. Army) eighth.

Larry Dixon of Bob Vandergriff Racing holds the provisional pole in Top Fuel with a track record time of 3.791 (326.63).

The first session was delayed by two hours from sporadic drizzle throughout the afternoon. The delay produced near optimal conditions for the second session that began at 10 p.m., about two hours later than scheduled, with unseasonable temperatures in the high 60s.

Qualifying continues Saturday with sessions scheduled for 4:30 and 7 p.m. leading to Sunday’s championship eliminations scheduled to start at 11 a.m. (MT).

The Mopar Mile-High Nationals is the first of three races in three weeks that comprise the Western Swing that will include Mello Yello races at Sonoma next weekend followed by a trip to Seattle the following week.
