PowriPLANO, Texas (February 9, 2018) – Kevin Thomas, Jr., led 28 of 30 laps on the way to winning the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League season-opening “Sunshine State Midget Challenge” at Bubba Raceway Park, in Ocala, Florida. Ryan Robinson placed second and Tucker Klaasmeyer was third as Toyotas swept the podium Friday night.

The victory is the fifth national midget feature win for Toyota in 2018 and the manufacturer’s 207th since entering the sport in 2006.

Starting from the third position, Thomas quickly moved past fellow Toyota driver Chad Boat to take second and then passed Tanner Thorson for the lead on lap two. Thorson would re-take the lead on lap seven only to see Thomas use a slider to claim the point position on lap eight.

After 10 of 30 laps, Thomas continued to lead with fellow Toyota drivers Boat and Ryan Robinson running third and fourth, respectively. Boat’s night would come an end, though, as he slowed and then pulled into the infield, bringing out a caution with 10 laps remaining.

On the restart, Thomas started to stretch out his lead as the laps began to wind down. With two laps remaining, Robinson had worked his way up to second with Keith Kunz Motorsports (KKM) teammate Tucker Klaasmeyer having charged up to third from his 10th starting position. After a final caution on lap 28, Thomas once again pulled away as the two KKM drivers traded sliders for second coming down to the last lap.

At the checkered flag, it was Thomas winning in his Petry Motorsports Toyota, followed by Robinson and Klaasmeyer. Zane Hendricks, driving a second entry for Tucker-Boat Motorsports, would make it three Toyotas in the top five after climbing all the way up from the 19th starting position.

“It was a good night for us,” said Thomas. “We started third and got the lead at the bottom and then we made a few adjustments midway through the race. I’ve got to thank Scott Petry and all the guys, as well as Toyota and Speedway Engine Development. We’ve got a pretty nice package and this is something to build off of.”

Andrew Felker would place seventh, one spot ahead of Aidan RoosEvans in eighth, with Zach Daum in tenth. Rounding out the Toyota contingent was Presley Truedson in 12th, Sam Johnson in 13th, Holley Hollan in 14th, with Boat scored in 18th after his early retirement. The POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League is back in action in Ocala on Saturday night.
