Toyotas Dominate Opening Night of Indiana Midget Week At Montpelier

Toyota RacingMONTPELIER, Ind. (May 30, 2018) – Kyle Larson took the lead from teammate Tucker Klaasmeyer on a lap 10 restart and went on to lead the final 21 laps to win the first night of the USAC P1 Insurance National Midget series’ Indiana Midget Week at the Montpelier Speedway in Montpelier, Indiana, Tuesday night.

Logan Seavey placed third and Jerry Coons Jr. was fourth as Toyota-powered drivers captured three of the top four finishing positions on the night. Toyota-powered drivers have won 16 of 18 national midget car events in 2018.

Starting from the pole, Klaasmeyer jumped out to an early lead and quickly proceeded to pull away from the field, opening up almost a three-second lead in the first seven laps. Behind him Kevin Thomas, Larson and Seavey were in a battle for second with Larson finally moving around Thomas on the top side between turns one and two. Seavey wasn’t going to let his Keith Kunz Motorsports teammate have second without a fight, though as he slid Larson to momentarily take the second position before Justin Grant spun to bring out the caution on lap 10.

With the caution bunching up the field, Klaasmeyer’s big lead was lost and it wouldn’t take long before Larson would make a move for the lead on the restart. Blasting the cushion, Larson drove past Klaasmeyer between turns one and two to take the lead.
Larson would pull away from the field with Tyler Courtney eventually moving up to second and Seavey passing Klaasmeyer for third. By the midway point of the 30-lap event, it was all Larson as he pulled out to a two-second lead and continued to stretch the margin while running the high line throughout the race.

Twice cautions would bunch the field in the last nine laps and each time Courtney would make a run at Larson, but to no avail as Larson held off his challenger and once again pulled away from the field as he earned his second national midget feature win of the season.

Seavey made a late charge for second, but fell just short as Courtney placed second with Seavey third and Coons Jr. in fourth. Spencer Bayston placed seven with Rico Abreu ninth and Ryan Robinson was tenth as Toyota-powered cars captured six of the top-10 finishing positions.

USAC heads to I-69 Speedway in Gas City for the second night of Indiana Midget Week on Wednesday.
