blackdog topELKHART LAKE, Wisconsin (June 23, 2018) – Blackdog Speed Shop hopes to reverse its fortunes in the Pirelli World Challenge on Sunday following a tough opening race of the weekend at Road America. Nevertheless, the team is optimistic that it can give its home-track fans and friends reasons to celebrate with positive results with its pair of Chevrolet Camaro GT4.Rs.

Tony Gaples led Blackdog Speed Shop’s efforts in Saturday’s 50-minute combined race for PWC’s GTS and GT classes. Gaples placed eighth in GTSA behind the wheel of the No. 11 Blackdog Speed Shop Camaro GT4.R.

It was a solid drive back after a challenging start from the middle of the pack. Gaples was 11th in class after the first lap but steady and consistent laps in between three safety car periods were enough to move him back to his original starting position, and he ran as high as seventh after the final restart with seven minutes left.

Lawson Aschenbach in the No. 1 Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R had an even more difficult day. A suspension problem in Saturday morning’s final practice sent him off-track, and the Blackdog Speed Shop crew worked tirelessly during the day to repair the Camaro and get Aschenbach in the race.

Starting last among the 24 GTS cars, the defending PWC class champion immediately sliced his way toward the front. He gained 14 positions on the first lap alone and ran as high as sixth before contact from another car damaged the same area of the car from the morning shunt. The Blackdog Speed Shop crew went to work again and sent Aschenbach back out after a couple of stops with a car fast enough to qualify fourth for Sunday’s second race of the weekend.

Race 2 is scheduled for 4:35 p.m. CT on Sunday. Live race coverage will be available at World-ChallengeTV.com as well as SiriusXM Channel 383.

TONY GAPLES, NO. 11 BLACKDOG SPEED SHOP CHEVROLET CAMARO GT4.R: “That was a busy race with a lot going on around me. In that respect it’s a decent finish. But ultimately it wasn’t what I had in mind for our home race. I had a difficult start, and it’s hard to make up ground around Road America when you lose momentum. The cautions helped me to reset, and things started to go our way a little. The run after the last restart was pretty hectic. Guys were being aggressive, going off track and coming back on. So I’m glad to come out of that pack with an undamaged race car. We’ll look at things for tomorrow and see if we can’t give our friends and fans a better race.”

LAWSON ASCHENBACH, NO. 1 BLACKDOG SPEED SHOP CHEVROLET CAMARO GT4.R: “First off, a big thanks and well done to Blackdog Speed Shop for getting this Camaro GT4.R ready to race. It wasn’t an easy job but I couldn’t ask for a better effort from the crew. The car was phenomenal early on. We had great speed and great handling. It’s too bad the hit at Turn Five sent us to the back again. I don’t think the contact was warranted but that’s racing. It’s just a shame for everyone at Blackdog Speed Shop, Team Chevy and Pratt & Miller. To start at the rear of the field and move to sixth in three laps shows what kind of a car we have in the Camaro GT4.R. We know we have a good hotrod for tomorrow and a second-row starting spot. That’s a great chance to salvage this weekend.”
