Wilkerson’s LRS Mustang on Target for the Task After NHRA Denver Qualifying

tim wilkersonMORRISON, Colo. (July 22, 2018) – The Levi, Ray and Shoup Ford Shelby Mustang Funny Car came to Denver with a both a new body and rear end, and although making major changes for a race like the NHRA Mile-High Nationals is risky, driver and team owner Tim Wilkerson knew it was necessary. His nitro-powered beast of a racecar is already showing signs of happiness as he made steady progress through qualifying and is fired up for raceday on the mountain.

In the first round of qualifying, Wilkerson, wearing his crew chief cap, was a little off with the tune-up. Things got progressively better from there, however, and he rounded out qualifying with his best time of the weekend so far, a 4.056-second pass at 284.51 mph.

“I’m a little upset with myself for missing the first run on Friday so bad, because that just put us way behind the eight ball,” said Wilkerson. “But everything has been getting better with every run. I feel like we’ve got a good car. Tomorrow is going to be a whole different day, and nobody knows what we’re going to see out there. We’ll have sunshine on a hot track, so it’ll be a crapshoot, and it’s anybody’s ballgame.”

Wilkerson, who won the Mile-High Nationals in 2008, will race Shawn Langdon in the first round of eliminations.

“Hopefully, we can get by Shawn and keep going some rounds. Not that we wish any ill-will towards him, but he’s way ahead of us [in the points], so he can afford to take a little bit of a beating,” Wilkerson continued. “Anyway, we’ve had a good weekend so far, and we’re hoping to make it better. We had [longtime sponsor and friend] Dick Levi here today with a great group of folks, and that always makes us feel real good. It would be something real special to win Denver here in a place that means a lot to Dick, so we’re sure going to do our best.”

Final eliminations for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals will take place on Sunday, July 22, beginning at 11:00 a.m. Eastern.
