GRANTSVILLE, Utah (Aug. 12, 2018) – Pole winner Vesko Kozarov of Salt Lake City made it look easy Sunday in the 19-lap Round 10 Touring Car feature at Utah Motorsports Campus with a wire-to-wire victory in the Pirelli World Challenge Grand Prix of Utah.
The win for the driver of the No. 3 Rearden Racing Nissan 370Z TC Spec car was his second of the weekend and sixth overall in the 12-race series that concludes on Aug. 31-Sept. 2 at Watkins Glen International. Kozarov holds a healthy point lead entering the finale.
Kozarov jumped to the lead immediately in the 40-minute sprint race at the 3.048-mile, 14-turn outer circuit at UMC. He extended to his advantage to 3.6 seconds by lap 18 and cruised to a 1.8-second victory over Karl Wittmer in the No. 91 Classic BMW BMW M235iR and Saturday race pole winner Johan Schwartz in the No. 80 Rooster Hall Racing/West Virginia University BMW M235iR.
“The track was a lot better this morning than yesterday’s track as it is cooler this morning,” said Kozarov. “The car was a much easier drive today with these conditions. The car was fire, just fast. I was lucky, too, since the guys behind me – Karl, Johan and Matt – were fighting amongst themselves. That allowed me to get away a bit. It was very nice to get a double win for Rearden Racing at their home track.”
Finishing fourth Sunday at UMC was veteran Matt Travis in the No. 26 Classic BMW BMW M235iR followed by Robert Nimkoff in the No. 20 AutoTechnic Racing BMW M235iR and Jayson Clunie in the No. 27 Classic BMW BMW M235iR.
“The guys at Classic BMW and BMW Motorsport gave me an awesome car again,” said Wittmer. “I just had to put my head down and manage the car. Johan and Matt really kept the pressure on me with an exciting race. I knew they were there the whole time and needed to hit my marks and not make any mistakes. The track was greasier Saturday than today, but we did have sand blowing onto the track surface a little bit this morning. That can pose problem sometimes. Overall, we’ll take two second place finishes and move to Watkins Glen.”
“The start was very important here this morning and Karl had a better jump than I did,” said Schwartz, the 2015 TCB series champion. “I really enjoy racing with Karl. We had some good battles today and we didn’t touch once. It is a pleasure to race with him. Our battle for second with Karl, Matt and myself will make for great television. It was extremely close and very entertaining. It’s always nice to get back up on the podium (top-three).”GRANTSVILLE, Utah – Round 10 race results for the Touring Car class Sunday at Utah Motorsports Campus as part of the Pirelli World Challenge Grand Prix of Utah.
