POMONA, Calif. (February 9, 2020) – The first race of the season is off to a fine start for Tim Wilkerson and the Levi, Ray and Shoup Ford Mustang nitro Funny Car team. Wilkerson’s efficient Ford Mustang enters the 2020 season of NHRA’s Mello Yello Drag Racing Series bearing the same striking 40th anniversary Levi, Ray & Shoup colors, and the scheme seems to serve him well as he raced to a nice assortment of 3-second passes. Wilkerson will start from the No. 9 position and race J.R. Todd in the first round of eliminations.
In Friday qualifying, the driver who is competing in his 25th season as a nitro Funny Car pilot put back-to-back 3.9-second passes on the board to end the day in the No. 7 position. On Saturday, it was more of the same in the third session as he laid down a 3.918 at 322.96 mph that would serve as his quickest qualifying run.
“I’m optimistic,” said Wilkerson, who is seeking his first Winternationals win and enters raceday with one Pomona final round on his scorecard. “Our LRS Ford Mustang runs well, the parts look nice, and the team is really working together well. I’m pretty good and happy with our car.”
The final qualifying session was the only question mark for Wilkerson as he was a touch out of the groove and stumbled down track.
“When the track got good, I had nothing for it,” he said. “I couldn’t keep up with the racetrack; my new combination and me are not quite kosher-pickle yet. We aren’t a ball of fire yet, but we will be.”
Eliminations for the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals have been moved to 10am PT at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.
