HEBRON, Ohio (July 22, 2020) – Michael Handras earned his first Lucas Oil Divisional Series Wally over Rick Hughes in the final round of Super Comp at National Trails Raceway. The divisional race started with over 100 super comp entries on Thursday finishing the final round just before midnight on Friday. Michael battled seven rounds of competition in his Albrecht powered 2012 Racetech Dragster. Throughout the race he defeated some of the toughest competitors in the sport Troy Williams in round three and Phil Smida in the semis. In the final round with a stout .005 reaction time and an almost perfect 8.900 (8.899) he won on a double breakout when Rick Hughes ran 8.884.
Once we were heading to the quarterfinals I started to think we were getting on a little bit of a roll. The text messages started coming in from my friends back home watching online and I started to think this could be my day. My good friends Shawn and Jackie Fricke stepped in and helped me throughout the race. I was struggling on the tree so they conveniently blocked out my delay box with tape so I didn’t have to worry about the tree. My buddy Colin Richards was with me for every round of competition over the weekend. He kept me calm, took care of the tire pressure and made sure we were ready to race. The semi-finals was for sure one of my lucky rounds. I have a lot of respect for Phil Smida and have raced him before so I knew I had to be good and ready. Although I had a game plan to race I was relieved to see my win light come on after Phil went red. The final was was my third attempt at a Wally and ultimately a great race.
I’ve been chasing this Wally for six years and thought the first one would come in my Super Gas Cavalier. I came into the Columbus divisional race having struggled at a few races this year. Anyone who races in these .90 classes can tell you it definitely can get frustrating at times. It couldn’t have come at a better time. I seem to race well when I come out to D3 country and I will for sure be back.
A very special thanks goes to my family, friends, colleagues and sponsors who support MHR. I can’t possibly get them all in here but I’ll try: Dad, Mom, Lori & Andrew, Uncle Harry, Shawn & Jackie Fricke, Duane & Betsy Shields, Cam Brady, Lee, Barb, Chase and Cory Ream, Shane Sweigart, Jeff Stricker, Kyle Koretsky, Jason Kenny, Joe Gallucci III, Rich Rose, The McAuley, Iacono, Richards, Bodnar, Sepanek and Tavares families.
