Greg Anderson Rockets to No. 2 Position in NHRA Houston Qualifying

Summit topBAYTOWN, Texas (October 25, 2020) – With just two rounds of qualifying for this weekend’s Mopar Express Lane NHRA SpringNationals, drivers and tuners really needed to have all their ducks in a row. Team Summit had them lined up nearly perfect for Greg Anderson and the Americana-themed Summit Racing Chevrolet Camaro.

In varying conditions, Anderson laid down back-to-back 6.517-second passes to score a start from the No. 2 position – his best start since earning the pole at the U.S. Nationals.greg anderson“My Summit Racing Chevrolet Camaro is definitely good here,” said Anderson, a three-time Houston winner. “I had a great car last week, but I didn’t get the job done as a driver. My car is definitely great again this week, now I have to see if I can do a better job. It’s capable of winning this race, and that’s wonderful.”

Anderson blistered the racetrack with a 212.23 mph pass in the first session that held as top speed of qualifying, but the horsepower-heavy pass actually proved to be detrimental to Team Summit as it lined up a potential second-round meeting between Anderson and Jason Line, driver of the silver Summit Racing Chevrolet Camaro and a championship contender. Anderson tied Erica Enders for elapsed time and won the tie breaker on speed, pushing her down into the No. 3 spot and keeping hold of the second position.

“My Summit Racing Chevy was very fast today, but that turned out to bite us in a way,” said Anderson. “It isn’t ideal, but we’ve got two good cars. Now it’s just a matter of putting everything together for Sunday.”

Anderson will begin eliminations with a first-round meeting with young Mason McGaha, the Pro Stock rookie who lined up across from Jason Line in each of the most recent two events. Line, qualified in the No. 7 spot, will race Mason’s father, Chris McGaha. Soon to be retired from driving a Pro Stocker and focused on building engines in the KB Racing machine shop after this season, Line was just 31 points out of the points lead coming into this race.

“We made two runs today that were just okay, but that certainly isn’t going to stop us from doing everything that we can to win tomorrow with the silver Summit Racing Chevrolet Camaro,” said Line, who put up back-to-back 6.53-second passes in qualifying.

“We keep saying it, but every round counts right now, and the clock is ticking. We’ve got to do well every time, and we have to manage the challenges that come our way better than the next guy. Each racetrack has its own unique characteristics, and this one has some pretty significant bumps in the middle. Both lanes are about the same, but that will be part of the challenge for Sunday.”

Eliminations for the Mopar Express Lane NHRA SpringNationals will begin at 10am on Sunday, October 25, at Houston Raceway Park.
